Halfway already?!? The first half of the PCT has flown past. It feels like only yesterday that I was preparing all my gear back in Iowa and seeing what I could ditch to cut weight. AND we are still in California? As much as I love the state I am ready to get to Oregon!

Hiking through a burn zone brings up a lot of feelings and thoughts. It makes you realize just how powerful mother nature can be. She can be absolutely brutal with no preference for us humans. At the same time, it is incredible to be in the presence of such a powerful force. Seeing the remains is enough for me, I hope to never come face to face with one of these fires.

Each year there are more and more fires resulting in more and more burn zones. These burn areas can stay closed for a few months or up to a few years depending on the severity. In order to continuously hike from Mexico to Canada is impossible without hiking an additional 150-200 miles around some of these closures. Thankfully, the closures are minimal for now but fire season is still among us and fires could appear any day....

Joseph, did you go anywhere near Paradise, CA? Not sure if you remember that fire from a few years ago but Jenna was actually living and working in Paradise when that fire broke out. Talk to her sometime...she has quite the story to tell.

I have enjoyed following you on your trek. What a wonderful opportunity for you and one I am sure you will never soon forget. What an adventure, I can't even imagine the sights you have seen. Best of luck on your continued journey! Travel safe!

We were not but I remember my mom mentioning that! I will definitely have to chat with her when I'm back in town. Thanks so much Rona!
